Dr. Cherie Spanier
What inspired you to choose a career in psychology / professional counseling? I have always enjoyed working with children. A career in psychology appealed to me because of the ability to work with children one-on-one and really make a difference. As a psychologist in both the school setting and private practice, I get to meet kids where they are at and work with the most important people in their lives, their families and teachers, to help them thrive in all environments. How would you describe your approach to practice? I utilize a cognitive-behavioral approach in therapy to help my patients see how their thoughts and perceptions influence their behavior. I empower my clients to change the things they have control over and accept the things that they cannot. Before any of this, especially with children, it is important to build a connection and trust, and make it fun! I love using games and play to help children process their feelings and work through challenges. What’s a hobby or interest you enjoy outside of work?
I love spending time outdoors with my family-whether at the beach in the summer or snowboarding in the winter. I also enjoy traveling, reading, baking, exercising, listening to podcasts, and spending quality time with friends.Do you have a favorite book, movie, song or quote that inspires you? In my school office, I have a poster with the quote, " A hundred years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kinds of car I drove, but the world will be a better place because I was important in the life of a child." I try to live by this everyday - the role we have in shaping children's lives, being a safe person for them, or creating a bright spot during chaotic times- is truly powerful and so much more meaningful than all of the material things we can easily get caught up in.
